Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Salem is branch of Ramakrishna Mission with its headquarters at Belur Math, Dt. Howrah, West Bengal - 711 202. It is one of the oldest Centres in South India having its foundation laid in the year 1919 and formally opened in 1928. It was affiliated to the Mission in 1941.


Activities of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Salem

Temple of Sri Ramakrishna : Daily puja in the morning and Aarati & Bhajan in the evening - Timings are 4.30 a.m to 11.30 a.m and 3.30 p.m to 8.00 p.m.

Spiritual discourses, Spiritual Retreats (Antaryoga) and Jayanti Celebrations are being conducted.

The Salem Ashrama conducts various activities, such us:


a. National Youth Day Inter-school literary competitions

Competitions are conducted once in a year during July - August months. About 35 to 40 schools participate with around 2000 students in participation.

Around 300 prizes are distributed for winners in different categories of competitions both in Tamil and English.

b. Vidyadana

Scholarship amounts being given to school and college going poor and needy children in the beginning of academic year.

Free notebooks to about 1000 to 1200 poor and needy children are distributed.

c. Balasangha:

A free Sunday Moral & Cultural classes for children in the age group of 7 to 12 years being conducted at Ashrama premises between 9.30 a.m to 12.00 noon.Bhajans, Yoga, Story-telling, Short films on spiritual stories / Motivational / inspirational / etc are being conducted by able resource persons followed by distribution of snacks and health drink.


d.Free Tuition Centre with Computer Training

A free Tuition Centre from 6.00 p.m to 8.00 p.m daily (except Sundays) being conducted for around 140 poor and needy children in the age group of 5 to 17 years at Pudur Kallanguthur, an under privileged locality, Salem (about one km from Ashrama). Classes are being conducted with six qualified teachers and an in-charge, which was started in 2001.

One set of dress to 140 poor and under privileged children of Pudur Kallanguthur being distributed.

A free tution centre for 50 to 60 poor and needy village children, being conducted at Village Kallavi, in Uthangarai-Tk,Krishnagiri-District.



e.Personality Development Workshop & Comprehensive Value Education :

An integrated programme for students of higher classes and college students, is held periodically. Students are made aware of their latent potentialities. The programme focuses on making younger generation, to face the challenges in the world boldly and shoulder responsibility and be good contributive citizens.



a) Annadanam:

Daily about 140 poor and under priviledged children of Pudur Kallanguthur, Salem, between age group of 5yrs to 17yrs are being provided with cooked food like-Sambar rice/ vegetable rice/lemon rice/curd rice/tamarind rice etc. along with milk with boost is provided between 5.00 to 6.00pm on all days (Sundays – bun with milk).Weekly banana is also provided to children.


b) Butter Milk distribution:

During summer month of May, butter milk to the wayfarers is being distributed. Around 13,000 to 14,000/- wayfarers benefit.

c) New clothes distribution:

Every year, for Deepavali, new clothes like- Sarees, Blouse pieces & towels for ladies and lungi, shirts and towels for men and children dresses being distributed to around 200 inmates of Government Rehabilitation(leprosy) Homes at Deviakurichi-Village, Attur-Tk and Selliampatty-Village in Dharmapuri-Dist.Sweets and provisions for for inmates is also provided.


a) Charitable Dispensary:

Started in 1933.Presently, on an average 140 to 150 patients per day benefit. Mainly allopathic treatments are provided on all days (except Sundays and holidays). The charitable dispensary is visited by around 25 allopathic doctors, one Homeopathy

and one Siddha doctor. Different specialities in allopathy include - General, diabetics, ortho, Cardio, Gynec, dermatology, Peadiatrics, Neurology, ENT, Psychiatry, Dental, Physiotherapy, Ophthalmology. A medical laboratory , X-ray unit, dental x-ray unit, Ultra sound scan equipments function within the charitable dispensary premises. A pharmacy with necessary allopathic medicines is being run in the dispensary premises. Medicines at highly concessional rates are provided to patients. Poor and needy patients are treated free of cost including medicines.

b)Free Mobile Medical Camps:

Free Multi-speciality Mobile Medical Camps, with 8 to 10 doctors from various disciplines, and more than 10 volunteers is being conducted. On an average 4 camps per month conducted in the rural areas, in a range of 30 to 40kms in and around Salem town. In the camps, patients do consultation with doctors and those who need ECG, Glucose tests, Eye tests, pressure checks are done free of cost. As per doctors prescriptions allopathic medicines are provided free of cost to the required patients. After eye screenings, those requiring spectacles, details are noted and spectacles provided within a week. Those patients identified with cataract are taken to the eye hospital for surgery. Patients are kept at eye hospital for the night and surgery is normally done on the following day. After surgery and follow up patients are dropped back to the same village, from the place of pickup. All this is being done free of cost for the poor and under privileged village people.
